For those who aren’t familiar, who is Joe Young?
Joe Young is an all around hustler from Germany, Europe. An artist, entrepreneur, hustler, boss… a universal grinder.
You mention being an entrepreneur, you at one point owned a couple of nightclubs, are you still in the nightclub business?
Actually I got rid of those clubs a while back, time wise, I wasn’t able to continue that business venture. It became a little stressful but I had some real good times. Right now i’m just dedicated to my music and i’m working on my clothing line. 2014 is going to be an interesting year for me and my brand.
You were born in Germany but have spent some time in the US, what is the biggest difference in the hip hop culture and what artists did you draw the most influence from?
I was born in Germany and the biggest difference is definitely the taste in music and the taste in fashion.
Over here people still love the raw form of Hip Hop, the raw art form, like Wu-Tang and Rakim, people still appreciate the pure form of Hip Hop over here. That’s why a lot of the old school (US) artists come over here (Germany) and perform because people still have love for them out here.
Throughout my whole career I learned the most from the Wu-Tang Clan and Tupac, they really influenced me the most and that’s who I still listen to, before I listen to anything else i’ll listen to them.
You mention the Wu-Tang Clan being a major influence, what was it like to work with them individually and how close are you with them now?
I started my career with Wu-Tang, my first video ( I Don’t Wanna Go Back) was actually shot here in Germany featuring Inspectah Deck and I still work with Wu-Tang frequently. I just did a song with Raekwon and we have a few other things going so my relationship with certain members of the Wu-Tang Clan in great. I don’t believe in burning bridges… shout out to Wu-Tang.
In 2005 you released the album “Cash & Grams” on Sony BMG, how did that deal happen and what inspired that album?
I was a club owner and I promoted a lot of shows, so naturally I became in tune with a lot of artists and a lot different people that attracted me to Hip Hop. I did some songs with some people I had booked some shows for. I started looking for opportunities of putting that music out and into album form. I took the idea that I had accompanied with some music I had and I played it for an A&R over at Sony and that’s how the deal happened… Put out the video, put out the album and the rest is history. It’s labeled a classic over here.
Since your last album you have been noticeably busy doing features and collabs with some big names such as Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, The Game, Wiz Khalifa, Wu-Tang and a host of others, building a buzz in the United States, how do you feel about being heard across the world?
Being able to have music available to people on the other side of the world is just amazing, being played on the radio in New York on Hot 97 and just being able to share your music to people across the world and for them to appreciate your work is a big accomplishment to me.
What do you currently have going on and what can the world expect next from Joe Young?
I’ve got a few projects i’m working on but as of right now i’m focusing on this mixtape, it’s called “Joe Young and Friends”, dropping on January 1, 2014, it’s more like an effort i’ve made throughout a period of time collaborating and associating myself with a slew of different artists from the U.S.. I’m also working on a reality show called “The Young Life” which we’ve already shot a few episodes in the U.S., it will air early 2014 accompanied with an EP titled the same (The Young Life). For the third quarter (of 2014) I have a street album called “My Lord Knows” that i’ve been working on for quite some time but I kept pushing it out because I wasn’t ready to release that yet but I will be ready in a few months. My main focus is this project “Joe Young and Friends”, then right after that is the reality show with the EP.
Would you like to give any shout outs?
I wanna give some shout outs to my people, shout out the homie Anthony Bowen, shout out my nigga my mentor my ace Raekwon, shout out my homie Smit (Back Door Movement- BDM), shout out to the whole West Coast… Game, Spider Loc, Mitchy Slikk, shout out to Crooked I, shout my team out here, shout out Michael U, my wife and little brother and my family, shout out DJ Kay Slay , shout out D- Roc from Ying Yang Twins, shout out to AK from Do or Die, shout out Ross (Rick Ross) , shout out the Wu-Tang Clan and everybody else I forgot.
